You rarely measure a roof by climbing it. Instead you measure the building footprint from the ground and scale it up by the roof’s pitch. This guide gives the multiplier table, converts area into roofing squares and bundles, and flags the waste that hips and valleys add.

The roof area formula

Roof area = footprint area × pitch multiplier
Multiplier = √(1 + (rise/run)²), then divide by 100 for squares.
run · 12"rise 6"slopePitch multiplier = √(1 + (rise/run)²) = 1.118Roof area = flat footprint × pitch multiplier
A steeper pitch means more roof surface over the same footprint

Roof pitch multipliers

Worked example: a gable roof

A house with a 40 ft × 30 ft footprint and a 6/12 pitch:

Include the eave/overhang in the footprint measurement.
StepValue
Footprint40 × 30 = 1,200 sq ft
Pitch multiplier (6/12)1.118
Roof surface1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft
Roofing squares1,342 ÷ 100 = 13.4 squares
+ 10% waste≈ 14.8 squares
Measure the footprint, including overhangs

From the ground, measure the outline the roof covers — walls plus the eave overhang on each side.

Squares & bundles

Bundle counts vary by shingle line; confirm on the wrapper.
MetricValue
1 roofing square100 sq ft
Bundles per square (3-tab / architectural)3 bundles
Nails per square~320 (4 per shingle)

Hips and valleys add waste

Every hip and valley means diagonal cuts. Move from 10% toward 15% waste as a roof gets more complex.

Common mistakes

!
Using footprint as roof area

A flat footprint understates a sloped roof by 5–40%. Always apply the pitch multiplier.

!
Forgetting overhangs

Eaves extend past the walls. Measure the area the roof actually covers.

i
One waste factor for every roof

A cut-up roof with dormers wastes far more than a plain gable. Scale waste to complexity.

Key takeaways

  • Roof area = footprint × pitch multiplier.
  • Multiplier = √(1 + (rise/run)²); a 6/12 pitch = 1.118.
  • A roofing square = 100 sq ft ≈ 3 bundles.
  • Add 10% waste for gables, 15%+ for hips and valleys.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate roof square footage?
Measure the flat footprint area the roof covers, then multiply by a pitch multiplier that accounts for the slope. A 1,200 sq ft footprint with a 6/12 pitch = 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft of actual roof surface.
What is a roofing square?
A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Materials are sold and labor priced by the square. A 1,342 sq ft roof is 13.4 squares.
What is a roof pitch multiplier?
It is the factor √(1 + (rise/run)²) that converts flat footprint area to sloped roof area. A 6/12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.118, meaning the sloped roof is 11.8% larger than the ground it covers.
How much roofing waste should I add?
Add 10% for a simple gable roof and 15% or more for roofs with many hips, valleys and dormers, where more cutting is required.
